Measurement starts with a definition

Keep a quantity, its unit, its source and its observation context in the same record.

THE QUESTIONS TO KEEP

  1. What quantity is being recorded?
  2. Are the units comparable?
  3. Which condition affects interpretation?
Take a question to your working note
01

The learning question

A useful measurement record names the quantity, unit, instrument or source and the context of the observation. Values are easier to compare when those details remain visible.

02

The complete context

Do not treat an unrecorded estimate as a precise result. Ask whether the comparison uses the same definition and conditions before interpreting a difference. Technical tolerances belong to the approved reference or responsible process.

03

A record worth discussing

A number becomes easier to interpret when another reader knows what was counted or measured. Record the definition and the source before comparing values. If a value was estimated, label it as an estimate. Where a technical decision requires an approved limit, return to the actual current reference rather than inventing a tolerance from the recorded values.
